What is actually carbide?

What are the advantages of using carbide?

Glued, soldered or screwed to other materials such as plastic or steel, carbide increases the working
life while at the same time increasing the performance of various components and tools. Compared
to high-speed-steel (HSS), carbide enables the tool to be subjected to significantly higher loads.

In addition, low wear is made possible despite higher temperatures while machining other materials
with high processing speed

What is carbide?

Hardmetal or “tungsten carbide” is a sintered metal, which mainly consists of the material tungsten
carbide (WC) with a density of 15.63 g / cm³ and a hardness that almost corresponds to diamond. It
also contains a binder, usually cobalt or nickel, which gives the alloy its toughness. Therefore the
correct chemical name for hardmetal is tungsten carbide cobalt.

Depending on the grade, the base material in powder form has different degrees of fineness and mixing ratios. By increasing the cobalt content, the carbide becomes softer but also tougher, which means that it can break less quickly when struck.

Carbide production

In a first process, the granulate made of tungsten carbide and cobalt is pressed in the later shape (so-called green part). In a second step, this green part is sintered at a temperature of around 1,500 °C,
which reduces its volume and creates the actual WC-Co compound.

The resulting raw blank can now be further edit. The final part can be raw, ground, polished, or prebrazed. Depending on product and application, tungsten carbide parts can be soldered or glued to
steel parts.
